Character Name: Xigbar
Series: Kingdom Hearts 2

Physical Description: Of medium height and a little on the skinny side, Xigbar looks the part of the pirate no matter how you try to take him. He's got the muscles, the scars, and even the eyepatch - his right eye being missing, and him not wanting to show off the mess where it once was - and half the time the way he speaks screams 'pirate'. His left eye is a dark gold color, and his hair is black - for the most part. Several long streaks of white-gray go from where his bangs would be (if he ever bothered to cut his hair) all the way down to the end of his ponytail, giving him the look of an older man. Which he is. His scars are numerous, with the most obvious being on the left side of his face and ending just under his jaw; he likes to claim, however, that the most infamous one goes from his lower back across one side of his rear end. Not very many people have seen it, though.

As for clothing, Xigbar wears what's comfortable and useful for being a pirate. Sleeveless shirts, vests, loose pants, hardy boots, and other simple things, all in varying shades of white, brown, or black. (This includes his eyepatch.) When he feels like being impressive, he'll put on a decent getup, and when he cleans up, he can come off as surprisingly impressive and imposing ... but still a pirate. Maybe a gentleman pirate. Regardless, he prefers the simple to the extreme unless it gets shock value. Because Xigbar loves shock value.

Personality: For someone who's worked on the seas and in the air as long as he has, Xigbar is surprisingly laid back. He prefers idle banter to strict conversations, sarcasm to hostility, and discussion to arguments. He'll blow off most insults to himself or other people with hardly more than a laugh and agreement in some cases, choosing to insinuate that said insult actually runs deeper in the insulter than the insultee. That's not to say he can't get angry, though; when hostility goes on too long or one of the rare few people Xigbar genuinely likes is forcefully insulted or hurt, a dark, simmering rage will rise up, and he turns darkly dangerous. Then again, as a pirate, he's always got some air of dark danger around him; it just intensifies when he's truly angry.

While it's somewhat hard for anybody to truly and deeply like Xigbar because of his constant little jabs and jibes (and sometimes his almost unbearable way of talking - how often do you hear a man approaching forty say, "As if!"?), he is easy to get along with, and he does have a few people that he's truly taken a shine to. However, most of them are long dead - not that he's terribly put off by it - or long missing from his life. He's always open to a new opportunity, though. While friends can turn into enemies and stab you in the back, while you have them, they're great to bum drinks and money off of.

A pirate he is, and a pirate he will be - Xigbar's a fan of the three cardinal vices: wine, women, and song. Admittedly he's more of a rum-and-whiskey type guy, and while he can appreciate the female form (and frequently does) he's still open to the concept of fluid sexuality, and his adoration of song really goes more along the line of general merrymaking. He's as close to the stereotypical pirate as you can get without actually being there. And he's a little more friendly than you'd expect a pirate to be, too.

As a final note, Xigbar's something of a social dumbass, and doesn't always notice when he does hurtful things. This is probably why he doesn't have all that many long-term friends. (Being a pirate doesn't help, though.)

Abilities/Strengths/Weaponry: Xigbar's strong from years of pirating, and despite missing an eye, his depth perception isn't that badly off. Being an older man, he's had more experience and can work his way out of nasty situations easier; he's also got more general skills (on-site quick mechanics and the like). His biggest strength is, oddly enough, his aim with a gun. Maybe missing an eye gives him an edge, or maybe he's just damn talented; whatever the reason, Xigbar is an awesome shot, keeping at least two guns on him at all times and able to fire both with unparelleled accuracy. He's not bad with a blade, either, but he prefers long-range attacking to going into melee combat.

Weaknesses: Missing an eye basically shuts out the right side of the world to him; if someone's particularly quiet, they can sneak up on him from that side without him ever knowing. And despite his working through it for years, Xigbar's never completely gotten over the sudden shift in depth perception; he has issues catching small things thrown at him. Rope? Oh, that's fine. A wrench? Sure, why not. A stone? It's probably going to nail him between the eyes before his hand even closes.

And, as mentioned before, he's a poorer swordsman than sharpshooter, and a social dumbfuck. Not to mention that he's getting up there in the years, for somebody born on a poor island and raised as a pirate, so his body is, while still strong, starting to wear down. It's kind of a sensitive point for him, being that most of the captains he's served under in the last couple of years have been significantly younger than him.

History: Xigbar was born on Naraka, in Kusadasi, to a family that worked (and practically lived) on the port. His mother died within a year of his birth, leaving his father alone with two sons. The early part of his life was not very extraordinary - he lived, breathed, and existed solely for sea and air ships, and by the time he was eight he could cuss and talk just as well as any sailor over 25. He participated in his share of pirate raids, fighting off the invaders alongside his father and brother, and being a smaller boy, was taught to fire guns from a distance. This is what started his affinity for guns and the long-range attack.

When Xigbar was fourteen, his brother was violently killed in a pirate raid, and his father succumbed to a smiliar fate within a year. Left an orphan, the wise-cracking, angry fifteen year old sharpshooter decided there was nothing left for him in Kusadasi, and jumped onto the first ship in the port that would let him on; he was already something of a sailor-in-training, he just needed a little sea experience - and he got it. Within two years, he had become an excellent sailor, assisting the ship as any proper sailor was meant to do. But the law-abiding life bored him; after passing through Destiny and Elysium and seeing the treasures that lurked there, he decided it was time he became a pirate. For the next four years, he served under a dark and brooding captain who appreciated Xigbar's aim with a gun and whose crew taught him everything he needed to know about piratry.

But, as all good things are bound to end, the captain was killed after a particularly brutal fight with the law, leaving the crew to their own devices. They made port in Illyria that night, and Xigbar, upset over the death of his captain and several of his comrades, headed into a bar and got completely smashed. While in there, he wound up getting into a massive brawl with several other patrons, and during the fight, a broken bottle was shoved into his right eye, scarring the skin around it and partially blinding him forever. Xigbar has almost no recollection of this night; what he does remember is the glass, the screaming, and him waking up in a lot of pain outside the bar, unable to see out of his right eye. He went to a local clinic to have the glass pulled out and his face patched up. Unfortunately for him, a night face-down in a street didn't go over so well with the injuries, and within a week it was badly infected; after two weeks of hiding in the port (the crew of the former ship had disbanded - they had been fairly loyal, and most just disappeared), he went back to the clinic, the right side of his face a disgusting mess. The doctor told him he was an idiot, removed what was left of the eyeball, and managed to prevent the infection from spreading too far; still, what was left behind was a mess of ugly scar tissue, and Xigbar took to keeping it bandaged at all times. (Personally, he thought it looked kind of badass to have bandages wrapped around his head; later, he would think the eyepatch was even more badass.)

It didn't take long for him to find work again, once he'd recovered from the total loss of his eye. He spent five years on a ship called the Nocturne, learning how to work again now that his depth perception had been screwed over. Partway through his term on the Nocturne, when he was 23, one of their raids on a pirate ship coming from Kusadasi (as it turned out later, they had just finished their own raid) resulted in the retrieval of a terrified five year old boy. Now, Xigbar had never been a huge fan of the slave trade (although he didn't oppose it, either), but none of the crew seemed willing to part with someone so young to anybody on Destiny or Elysium for fear of what would befall him, and decided to keep the boy. Xigbar quickly grew fond of the little Demyx, but at 25 he jumped ship at a port and made for a new life of pirating among other pirates.

For quite some time, Xigbar simply went from crew to crew, spending a few years here or there before either leaving of his own volition for something new, being kicked out during a mutiny, getting abandoned at a port, or some other suitably pirately reason. At one point he returned to the Nocturne and spent another two years with them, getting acquainted with the new captain and crew and reacquainted with Demyx, who he was pleasantly surprised to see had become as much a part of the ship as the engine. But after that time was up there was, once again, a form of mutiny that resulted in a dead captain, and Xigbar vanished again.

Five years (and two more ship-jumps) later, Xigbar stopped in Illyria after a particularly messy mutiny for a drink, ready to find a new captain who would let him on the crew - after all, he was experienced and looked the part. Who could resist his amazing pirate charm?
